The Thema was first shown in Turin Motor Show in 1984. Contents 1 Overview 1.1 Thema 8.32 2 Engines 3 References 4 External links [edit] Overview The Thema was available as a sedan and as a station wagon designed by Pininfarina, and was considered one of the most spacious and comfortable European cars of its time. In addition to the sedans, 21,074 Thema station wagons were built by Pininfarina between 1986-1994 in their Borgo San Paolo plant.[2] The Thema re-established Lancia as a high-quality luxury manufacturer with a galvanized steel chassis and rust protection that equaled or bettered that of its competitors. Build quality was higher than the Fiat Croma's and on par with the Saab 9000's. The sales organisation, however, was poor in many markets and secondhand values for the car suffered. Production of the Thema ceased in 1994 when Lancia withdrew from right-hand drive markets (including the United Kingdom) in response to dwindling popularity and sales. (The station wagon version was never offered in right-hand drive.) Lancia continued, however, to be one of the most popular manufacturers in the Italian market and the Thema's replacement, the Lancia Kappa, sold well. [edit] Thema 8.32 The ultimate Thema, the '8.32' ("8" standing for the number of cylinders and "32" for the number of valves) was assembled at Lancia's S. Paolo plant in Turin.[3] It used a 2927 cc Ferrari V8. This engine was based on the unit used in the Ferrari 308 qv and some of the componentry was assembled by Ducati[4] from castings made at Maranello. The engine differed from other Ferrari V8s of the time in that it was equipped with a cross-plane type crankshaft rather than the usual flat-plane crankshaft, smaller valves and different firing order. All this to make the engine characteristics more suitable in a four door luxury saloon. Both Series 1 and 2 cars in non catalysed form produced 215 PS (158 kW; 212 hp) and were capable of 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and 240 km/h (149 mph) whilst catalysed versions were slightly detuned to 205 PS (151 kW; 202 hp) which gave 0–100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and 235 km/h (146 mph). The car offered good performance (though the Turbo version was quicker than the catalytic version from 0 to 100 km/h) and excellent refinement, including a luxurious hand made wood-and-leather interior by Poltrona Frau complete with the same luxury equipment as LX versions of the Thema. Unfortunately, a price tag of £40,000 (or more) in Britain, and the fact that only left hand drive versions were produced, limited its appeal with only 9 being officially sold there. This version of the Thema also sold in limited numbers in Italy with 2370 Series 1 built between 1986 and 1988 and 1601 Series 2 built between 1989 and 1992. 64 numbered vehicles were made, 32 series 1 and 32 series 2. These were only available in Ferrari-red. 5 non catalyst Thema 8.32s were exported to Taiwan and 2 of them still survive today. [edit] Engines Thema powerplants originated from the Fiat engine series designed by Aurelio Lampredi, the famed engine designer formerly of Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. The straight-4 2.0 L petrol engine, available in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged versions, was refined and offered good performance. Earlier Themas were also offered with a 2.8 L PRV V6 engine, developed in cooperation with Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. This unit was replaced in 1992 with a 3.0 L Alfa Romeo V6 engine (Fiat had bought Alfa Romeo in 1986 and got access to this engine). Good luck with that... With Lancia threatening another crack of the whip here in the UK-market (we'll believe it when we see it), Shed brings you a taste of things to come with this the Thema, the last Lancia flagship to grace UK shores. Now, cynics amongst you - and we know you're out there - may protest the Thema is less than worthy of the illustrious Lancia shield, bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Saab 9000. In fact the cars share the same 'type four' chassis which also formed the foundations for the beautiful Alfa 164 and the, er, Fiat Croma. However as future Lancias look like sharing Chrysler under-duds, Shed wouldn't dream of suggesting such cosy relationships are in any way inappropriate for the brand. Like the 164, the Thema was designed by Pininfarina who are well known for their competence with a slab of clay - well usually, anyway. Where the Alfa relied on its flowing, graceful lines, the Lancia is a far more brutal affair. Flat-nosed and angry-faced, it looks like it's had one too many bad experiences in a boxing ring - much like the Integrale which unfortunately, as yet eludes Shed's purse. That's not to say the driving experience need be any less exciting than its rally-bred stablemate. With an engine designed by Aurelio Lampred (formerly of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari), this 148bhp, 2.9 litre V6 example can spirit the Thema to 60 in 8.2sec - before running out of puff at 129mph. Brakes devoid of ABS will remind you of days of old when thoughts turn to stopping, and there's no aircon to go wrong either. Should you decide to enter into negotiations with the vendor (whose opening gambit is £900), this sparkling silver example has been with in the same hands for the past nine years, covering only 5,000miles in the period. The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed the lack of a current MOT, but worry ye not as the owner assures Shed this is a typo and the old girl can - legally at least - stagger on until April 2011. Although the tatty exterior hints at this Thema reaching its twilight years, all the electrics function. However we have inferred from the ad this may be intermittently, at least as far as the electric windows are concerned, further cementing this fine car's noble Italian credentials. As well as being mechanically sound, this week's SOTW comes complete with the spares from another two Themas the owner has previously dismantled. Though, quite how reassuring this is, we're not entirely sure... "Caveat emptor," as somebody once said on the way to the forums. The advert reads: 1988 Lancia Thema Series 1 V6 For SaleOverall she is in good condition. Sunroof, Automatic heating (not aircon). Non-ABS version.Current owner 9 years and 5000 miles.MOT Apr 2010, Tax Oct 2010.Bodywork mostly good with the worst parts being a scabby rear wheelarch and the bottom corner of the rear screen. Mechanically good.Electrics all work fine although window switches have their moments.Rare Car. Loads of spares included (have broken 2 of these over the years). The 1985 Lancia Thema was one of four cars in the mid-1980s which used the Type Four chassis, the others were Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. Lancia Thema was one of the most spacious and comfortable European cars. Its 2.0 four-cylinder cars was normal aspirated and a very popular turbo version was refined and with very good performance. These engines originated from the Lampredi design very widely used by Fiat Group. Aurelio Lampredi was a former Ferrari engine designer. The earlier car was also delivered with a lacy 2.8 V6 engines developed in cooperation with the French PSA group and Volvo. The PSA engine was in 1992 replaced with a 3,0 L V6 Alfa Romeo engine, by many regarded as the best V6 engines ever made. The Thema reestabliched Lancia as a high quality luxury producer after the problems the Marque experienced with the earlier Lancia Beta in the 70's. As a result of the Fiat group selling of car factory to Russia, they made barter deals getting corrousious steel in return insteda of cash. The corrousious steel went into many of the Fiat products in the 70's and 80's and nearly ruined a good brand. Build quality was higher than the Fiat Croma and at par with SAAB 9000. The Thema had galvanized chassis. Many customers experienced a bad sales organisation in most markets and the secondhand value suffered. The car was also delivered as a beautiful Station Wagon (SW) designed by Pininfarina. The LX versions had same luxury equipment as the top of the range car Thema 8.32. The ultimate Lancia Thema was version 8.32, used a 3.0 L V8 Ferrari 205 bhp (153 kW) engine capable of more than 140 mph (234 km/h). It had fantastic performance ( though the Turbo versions was quicker from 0 to 100 km/h) and excellent refinement to be enjoyed while sitting in a luxurious wood-and-leather interior, but with a £40,000+ price tag and being left hand drive only, just a handful were sold in Britain. It was even a rare site on Italian roads. The Lancia Thema survived until 1994, when the marque withdrew from right hand drive markets (including Britain) because of a fall in popularity. But Lancia continued to be one of the most popular manufacturers on the Italian market and the Thema's replacement, Lancia Kappa, helped the marque sell its products well. It seems possible that Lancia may start to import to Britain again. Today the 8.32 -- and to lesser extent the Alfa engined V6 -- are real Classics.
